Vitamin D Enhances Lifespan

        Vitamin D helps the regulation of bone and calcium homeostasis. It is associated with age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and cancer. When Vitamin D levels are low, it can have an effect on human health. As people get older, the risk for Vitamin D deficiency increases.

Vitamin D is part of the super family of secosteroid hormones. The two types of Vitamin D are Vitamin D2 (produced by UV radiation of ergosterol) and Vitamin D3 (photo product produced in the skin).
          Protein homeostasis is part of the role in aging. Normally aging is a associated with loss of protein homeostasis and not enough protein. DAF- 16, HSF-1, and SKN-1 contribute to the maintenance of protein homeostasis. Vitamin D extends lifespan in C. elegans ( a model for investigating Vitamin D mechanisms).
          In the article Vitamin D promotes protein homeostasis and longevity via the stress response pathway genes skn-1, ire-1, and xbp-1 the scientists used D3-fed worms to prove that Vitamin D helps with lifespan. The worms synthesized physiological levels of bioactive 1,25-(OH)2D3. The worms had the steroid hormone precursor to synthesize 1,25-(OH)2D3. Dietary D3 reduced the age dependent formation of proteins and extended the life span of the worms.
         Skn-1 plays an important role in aging, and functions to promote protein homeostasis when aging normally. It regulates stress responses and is central of a healthy extended lifespan.
         Low Vitamin D levels are a marker of ill health and when absent in diet, it can lead to age-related loss-of-protein homeostasis and shortening lifespan. Having a consistent diet of Vitamin D can improve health. Vitamin D can be found in milk, cereals, yogurt, orange juice, cheese, fatty fish, and egg yolks. People also get Vitamin D from the sun (although too much sun can be dangerous and can lead to skin cancer, always remember to wear sunscreen when outside). Another way to receive Vitamin D id to take supplement. It is important to consistently get a daily dose of Vitamin D to live a longer and healthier life.
